And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation

....if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!

The following prayer was not written by Francis of Assisi but sums up his ideals and although probably written at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century, is relevant for us today.

The following adaptation was written by Br. Michael Daly. C.J. 2007

Prayer of St Francis

Lord make me an instrument of your Shalom (peace)

Where hatred lives...let me sow love;

Where injury has divided and hurt...may I sow reconciliation, bringing pardon, healing and deliverance;

Where doubt pervades...let me sow true faith in you;

Where despair destroys...let me bring the hope of your gospel;

Where darkness is the covering...let me dispel it by bringing the light of your presence;

Where sadness consumes...let me sow joy, that all may with joy draw water from you the wellspring of our salvation.

Divine Master and Lord of all consolation, grace and love; grant that I may by your Holy Spirit, console, understand and love all whom I meet, communicate and share this earth with, seeking always to serve their needs rather than my own. For in giving we receive, in pardoning we are pardoned and in dying we are born to eternal life, through Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Prayer Before a Crucifix

An adaptation of the earliest recorded prayer of St Francis of Assisi in San Damiano by Br. Michael Daly.C.J. 2008

Most High and Glorious God,

Please bring your light to the darkness of my heart and give me true faith in you,

Firm hope

and Perfect love.

Lord Jesus Christ let me by the counsel of your Holy Spirit,

have right feelings and knowledge

so that I may properly undertake the task you have given me.

To show forth the glorious excellency of you my Lord and God.

My Heavenly Father Counts All My Tears

Heavenly Father,
I thank You for the assurance
that my troubles are not greater than my Helper,
and that my sins are not greater than Jesus, my Saviour.
There is no reason for me to despair.
I have a God who helps me and saves me.

I thank You for the assurance
that I am not forgotten in my troubles.
Your fatherly eye sees me.
You count all my tears,
and Your loving heart has already planned help for me.

If there is one thing You cannot do,
that is disappoint Your child, and for this I thank You.
You are holding me in Your hands
and will draw me out of the depths,
because You love me
and will never forsake me.

Heavenly Father,
I am Yours now and for ever. Amen.

A Prayer for the Church, by William Laud (1573-1645)

Most gracious Father,

we pray to you for your holy catholic Church.
Fill it with all truth;
in all truth with all peace.
Where it is corrupt, purge it.
Where it is in error, direct it.
Where anything is amiss, reform it.
Where it is right, strengthen and defend it.
Where it is in want, provide for it.
Where it is divided, heal it and reunite it in your love;
for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
